Monument Design and Build was commissioned to develop the architectural and interior design, as well as carry out the extension and refurbishment works, of two luxury coastal retreats in the heart of Bamburgh.

The properties have a view of the spectacular Bamburgh Castle and neighbour the original listed Armstrong cottages, built in 1894 by Lord Armstrong for the workmen restoring the castle back to its historic grandeur.

From the outset, our client had a clear and educated vision for the extension and interior fit out of these two stunningly situated cottages — the latest additions to a growing high-end holiday letting business in Northumberland.

Monument got straight to work with the client in crafting the ideas and moodboards that would form an ambitious working brief and list of requirements.

Within weeks, we had the designs finished and building regulations approved. This quick turnaround meant our build team could provide full costs for the works on an open book basis and start the project.

Northumberland is absolutely on the up in terms of the attention it’s getting from staycationers across the UK. It was our job to make the cottages stand out from the crowded online listings, and deliver a unique holiday home experience.

Every element in the design and build was hand-picked by our team with an emphasis on authentic and bespoke materials and objects. The interiors had to be super stylish and robust enough to cope with the constant comings and goings year round.

Despite various supply chain issues associated with Covid, Monument’s build team handled the pressure and completed the works on time so our client could take advantage of the growing demand for holidays in Northumberland.
